In this blog entry, we are speaking to the parents in the Colorado Springs area. Recently, we had another post talking about finding what motivates you to keep going when it comes to rehabilitation and your health. You have to hone in on why it’s important for you to get stronger again, why you do what you do, and who you are doing it for.
Well, for many parents here in Colorado Springs who become patients at Backcountry Physical Therapy, the answer is easy. You are doing it for your kids. It’s actually the reason you do so many things in life.
As parents, your children are your world, and you would do anything for them. Doing things like spending countless sleepless nights when they’re little making sure they are fed, sleeping well, and cared for. You sit in the rain at their little league games. You save up money throughout their childhood to make sure they can go to college one day. Some day you even end up babysitting their kids for them once they become parents so they can get a break. You make so many sacrifices for your children.
Are you willing to go all in on investing time and energy into your health for your children?
Being able to Care for Your Kids
If you have young children, you should be rehabbing for your kids in the short term. You need to be able to directly give them care. It’s hard to pick up your kid if you have back pain. It’s challenging to kneel down on the floor to play with them when your knee is hurting. You really don’t want to try making a meal for them when your shoulder is just killing you every day.
It’s so important in the long term, too. We need to take care of ourselves and this is where physical therapists in Colorado Springs can help. When you are injured and consistently dealing with pain, it’s hard to focus on your own health. If you know you need to go to the gym…get some miles in on your scheduled runs…go for that bike ride. If you just can’t because that chronic pain won’t subside. Then your health suffers. You aren’t as strong as you used to be. You’re losing energy. There is a possibility you may start to have other health problems.
Then when you’re older and your kids are older, you can’t do things with them that you had planned on doing. You want to do that hike with them, but you never addressed that ankle problem you’ve had, and it got worse. They want you to travel on a vacation someplace, fun but your back hurts so bad, there’s no way you could sit in the car that long. You just never have energy anymore and don’t feel in good enough shape to go for a long bike ride around Colorado Springs.
I hate to say it, but maybe you’re not even around at all anymore because you ended up with so many other health problems.
Sharing Experiences
I don’t know about you, but one of the things that has excited me the most about having kids is the idea of doing all the cool stuff I love to do and sharing it with them. Right now, we take my toddler on runs with our running stroller, toss him in a bike trailer, got him started on skiing, and he loves going to the rock climbing gym with us.
Oh, and he also gets very excited when he can come into the Backcountry Physical Therapy clinic with me and hang out while his mother and I lift weights. We have a pair of one pound dumbbells we use mostly for patients that have recently had shoulder surgery that he likes to use. He will walk in the door and ask for “my weights”.
The idea that I won’t be able to do all of those things with him when he is older would just absolutely kill me. Your children are your buddies. If you love getting outside and going on adventures near Colorado Springs, you are literally raising your own little adventure buddy. If you aren’t taking care of yourself now, you’re missing out.

It takes time, energy, and resources to make those things happen.
If doing it for yourself isn’t enough to push you over the edge to make those great changes that will help you, then start to look externally.
